Blue moon is a rare event and hence the oft-quoted phrase of a rare occurrence of any event is called "once in a Blue Moon".

Outside the Griffith Observatory, which often draws tourists looking at the city's famous Hollywood sign, people lounged on the grass and peered through telescopes for a better look at the red-tinted "blood moon" shadow.

Some of those up early enough on Wednesday morning saw a special astronomical treat: a pre-dawn super blue blood moon.

The supermoon has been visible since last night, but in the USA and Australia it will take on a reddish hue, which gives it its name.

Extraordinary images tonight show the super blue blood moon around the world.

The last time the world witnessed this rare phenomenon was in 1982 and the next one will occur in 2037.

"A attractive moon, we got to the clearing right as the clouds were starting to break up a little bit and it was making its way through the clouds", said Catalano. The moon orbits around Earth in an elliptical pathway - when the moon reaches the closest part of its orbit, we have a supermoon.

This makes it appear up to 14 per cent brighter and 30 per cent larger than normal. "Its pretty cool" she said, "I would do it again because I kinda enjoy the silence and the no traffic on the way to school".

"It is a full moon, so it is going to be nice".

"And then the third thing is the "blood moon".

A blue moon, meanwhile, does not refer to hue, but refers to the second full moon of the calendar month. What is a lunar eclipse?

A "blood moon" occurs during a lunar eclipse when the sun, moon, and Earth are in alignment. It's nothing like the spectacle of a total solar eclipse, but the red tinge the moon takes on is striking.

During the eclipse, red light is refracted around Earth's atmosphere.

The event included a total lunar eclipse.

A lunar eclipse of a full blue moon is seen above the ferris wheel on the Santa Monica Pier. That event will be a supermoon, but it won't be a blue moon, according to NASA.
