Instead, another rocket and spaceship combination being developed by SpaceX, nicknamed BFR - alternately known as "Big Fucking Rocket", or "Big Falcon Rocket" - would be the vehicle eventually certified for travellers.

Launch window opens at 1:30 p.m. ET, with coverage starting at 12:50 p.m. ET on Space Coast Daily TV.

Musk's exploration company SpaceX intends to launch a "Falcon Heavy" rocket, specifically created to carry large payloads through the Earth's upper atmosphere.

The launch will take place during a window between 6.30pm United Kingdom time and 9pm.

Falcon Heavy draws upon the proven heritage and reliability of Falcon 9.

More: How does SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket work? Although much of the technology in the Falcon Heavy is proven, it is a new rocket and things could easily go wrong. As the company has been seen many failures in many launches especially when it tried to do something extraordinary, this time the rocket will only carry a dummy payload. In an interview with Ars on Monday, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said the company had tested as much as it could on the ground.

The vehicle will be hurled into an elliptical orbit that stretches out to Mars' orbit around the Sun, while playing David Bowie's Space Oddity on repeat on its radio.

What to expect during the launch?

The company had an unfunded Space Act Agreement with NASA where the space agency would provide technical support to SpaceX for the mission in exchange for engineering data from the spacecraft's landing on Mars. Now, SpaceX is finally ready to launch. Launch updates will continue throughout the rocket's flight.

However, future competitors, like Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, do plan on using reusable rockets, matching SpaceX with that crucial capability.

While just getting the rocket into the air will be an achievement, SpaceX have also set the ambitious goal of land all three rockets safely back on Earth after the launch. While one Falcon 9 has nine Merlin engines in its first stage, Falcon Heavy has 27. It'll be interesting to see how the spaceflight company broadcasts the triple-landing attempt.

For VIP treatment, buy a launch viewing ticket at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor's Complex.

Debuted in August of past year, the suit looks similar to ones seen in the sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey and has been designed for the Falcon Heavy's Crew Dragon capsule, which will launch humans into orbit and possibly beyond. Huge crowds are expected for the afternoon launch from Kennedy Space Center.

What happens to the rockets? Musk said he'll consider it a win if the rocket at least clears the launch tower.

"I hope it makes it far enough away from the pad so that it does not cause pad damage", Musk said noted. They have been given colourful names taken from spaceships in Iain M. Banks's sci-fi novel The Player of Games, such as "Just Read the Instructions" and "Of Course I Still Love You".
